There is extensive damage after an early morning fire at a strip mall in Newmarket.

Nancy Virgus watched as firefighters tried to save her business.

"It's just devastation," said Birgus. "It's your livelihood."

In total five businesses were damaged.

The fire started at about 3;30 a.m. It appeared to be under control, but flared again about an hour later and then quickly spread.

No injuries were reported but two firefighters were taken to hospital and later released.

Officials suspect the fire started at a drycleaning store but investigators from the Office of the Fire Marshal arrived early in the afternoon to try to determine the exact cause and assess the damage.
