Police have confirmed that the body found in the rubble of a burnt apartment building in downtown Toronto belonged to a woman who alerted several of its occupants to the blaze.

Toronto police on Thursday identified the woman who died in the Saturday blaze as Marie Speck. They had originally reported her missing.

Her body, which wasn't immediately identified, was first found Tuesday as the building at 1079 Bathurst St., near Dupont Ave., was being torn down.

Speck, 50, roused several slumbering residents early Saturday morning after the fire broke out. "All occupants are safe due to Marie Speck's actions," police said in a Monday release.

A post-mortem is being conducted Thursday.

Speck was a resident of the building.
