The 37-year-old forward heads to Toronto from the Anaheim Ducks for a conditional sixth-round pick in 2010.
"Brad will provide character, toughness, and he is a proven winner," Leafs general manager Burke said in a statement. "We look forward to the veteran leadership that he will give our team."
Like assistant general manager Nonis, May has been with Burke in previous stops in Vancouver and Anaheim.
He joined the league with Buffalo in 1991-92 and has also played for Phoenix and Colorado.
May arrived in Vancouver a few weeks ahead of Burke, and the pair were reunited in Anaheim in early 2007.
While GM for Anaheim, Burke traded for the Toronto native, who was able to partake in the first Stanley Cup in his lengthy career.
May is 37 games shy of the 1,000 mark. He has scored 126 goals and 159 assists to go along with 2,121 penalty minutes.
