A retired Toronto police officer has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the killing of his wife.
Susan Ryan, 57, was shot and killed Sunday morning in her Mississauga home.
Ryan was a real estate agent and the former head of the Mississauga Real Estate Board.
Her husband, Larry Ryan, 58, has been charged with second-degree murder and will appear in court in Brampton on Monday.
Const. Samantha Nulle, with Peel Regional Police, said someone called 911 to report the crime. When police arrived, they found Susan Ryan's body.
"We located a female victim, deceased, and another person was transported to hospital with unknown injuries," she said.
Neighbours watched in disbelief as their street was cordoned off and the body was removed from the home.
The Ryans were married for more than 30 years and do not have any children.
Neighbours, like Rosa Radice who has lived on the street for 24 years, were stunned.
"They were very nice people — and the rest I cannot tell. If they fight each other, or what happened, I don't know. But they were nice," said Radice.
Susan Ryan was also a longtime friend of Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion, who called her death "a great loss."
It is the 25th homicide in Peel Region this year.
