Losses, goalless drought continue for Toronto FC

Last Updated: Sunday, September 9, 2007 | 12:07 AM ET

The losses continue to mount for Toronto FC and so is the dubious record-long goalless drought.

Denilson and Abe Thompson both scored on penalty kicks to lead FC Dallas to a 2-0 shutout win over Toronto Saturday night in Frisco, Texas.

Toronto's last goal came on July 7 during a 1-1 draw against the Chicago Fire, while its last win was against Salt Lake on July 4.

Since the last victory, the team is 0-6-3 and has dropped its last four games.

The expansion franchise has also gone 732 consecutive minutes without scoring, shattering the old Major League Soccer benchmark of 557 minutes that was set by Real Salt Lake in 2005.

The injury-riddled soccer club played without star striker Danny Dichio, who is out for the next two to four weeks after tearing a foot muscle in a Tuesday practice session after crashing into defender Tyler Hemming.

While Toronto had the better scoring chances in the first half, Dallas scored the first goal in the 36th minute.

Thompson raced into the penalty area and was pushed in the back by Toronto defender Tyrone Marshall, giving Dallas a penalty-shot opportunity.

Marshall was handed a yellow card for the foul and Toronto's Andrea Lombardo received another for arguing the call.

Denilson, the Brazilian star who signed on Aug. 23, chipped a shot off the left post and into the back of the net for a 1-0 Dallas lead.

Toronto continued to press in the second half, but squandered its best chance in the 79th minute when Lombardo, who was sent in on a breakaway, sailed a shot over the crossbar.

Dallas put the game away in the 87th minute after Toronto's Joey Melo pulled down Dominic Oduro in the box and was handed a yellow. On the following penalty kick, Thompson's low shot to the left side beat Toronto goalkeeper Kenny Stamatopoulos.

Chris Pozniak had one final opportunity to score for Toronto in extra time, but his kick from close range grazed the crossbar.
