Ontario Liberals pledge $700M for home care

The Liberal government is putting $700 million into Ontario's home-care system to give seniors more help with meals, shopping, snow shovelling and housekeeping.

Health Minister George Smitherman said the three-year "Aging at Home" strategy will help better match seniors with the home-care help they need.

With Ontario's senior population expected to double in the next 16 years, Smitherman said the province wants to make it possible for more seniors to live in the comfort of their own homes.

The $700 million will start rolling out next April, well after the Oct. 10 election.

Conservative Elizabeth Witmer said the cash is just part of the Liberals' re-election strategy.

She said the Liberals have ignored seniors for four years and are just now throwing money at a serious issue that needs thoughtful attention.
