A child left alone briefly in a minivan was unharmed Monday morning after a thief stole and crashed the vehicle.
Halton Regional police say the mother started the minivan to warm it, then placed her three-year-old son inside. She left him momentarily while she returned to her Oakville house.
When she returned, the minivan was gone.
She called 911 and chased the vehicle on foot.
Her husband got into their other car and drove off in search of the stolen van, said Halton Regional Police Services Staff Sgt. Gavin Hayes.
A short distance away, the father found the van, which had apparently been involved in a collision.
The child was not injured and the father recovered him safely.
Police are still looking for the man and brought in dogs to search the neighbourhood for any clues to his whereabouts.
Hayes warns that motorists should never leave children unattended in a vehicle.
