Man gets 14 years in brutal slaying of wife

A Toronto man was sentenced to 14 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the killing and dismemberment of his common-law wife nearly a year ago.

Robert Wiszniowski told the court that he struck the woman on the head with a wrench to kill her because she caught him smoking crack cocaine and threatened to call police. Her remains were scattered throughout the city.

Robert Wiszniowski pleaded guilty to manslaughter Tuesday and was sentenced to 15 years.

He pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, but guilty to a charge of indignity to a dead body and a lesser charge of manslaughter.

The body parts of 46-year-old Rose McGroarty were found last November in different areas of the city — her legs, for instance, were found in a garbage transfer, and her torso was spotted in a laneway.

Police first discovered parts on Nov. 11, but didn't come up with an identity until a month later, after receiving a tip.

Wiszniowski was sentenced to nine years for manslaughter plus five years for committing an indignity to a body.
