A library book signed out 110 years ago in eastern Ontario has finally been returned by the borrower's family.
Last Wednesday, 83-year-old Dale Fenton Baird Sr., of Denver, Colo., returned the book — a leather-bound Webster's Dictionary — to Heritage Place Museum in Lyn, Ont., about 10 kilometres from Brockville.
Baird's uncle Mutt borrowed the book from Lyn Public Library in 1899 before the family moved to New York state from Lyn that winter.
The book, which is still in good condition even though it was once pulled across an ice-covered St. Lawrence River on a skid, was discovered in the home of Baird's sister.
No one from the Baird family will be forced to pay the overdue fine, which would have cost more than $9,000.
