Possible contenders for the party's top job

When Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion announced he would step down, the race to succeed him began in earnest. The contest ended when Michael Ignatieff was appointed interim leader on Dec. 10.

Liberal senators and MPs unanimously endorsed Ignatieff during a caucus meeting after the party executive held phone consultations with about 800 party members.

His appointment is expected to be made official at a party convention in Vancouver from April 30 to May 3.

Here's a look at Ignatieff and others who some observers said might have had their eyes on the top job.
