Newfoundland sealers take issue with cartoon

A recent editorial cartoon about Newfoundland sealers is attracting criticism from across the country. The cartoon appeared last week in The Globe and Mail.
The cartoon listed a number of "things to avoid while skiing": trees, Algerian religious fundamentalists, Alan Eagleson . . . and "Newfie sealers."
The complaints are coming from both Newfoundland and British Columbia.
Out in the west, people think the skiing joke comes too soon after a string of avalanche deaths.
In Newfoundland, people don't appreciate the abbreviated characterization of their provincial identities, nor do they like seeing a key industry clumped in with mass murderers.
The Canadian Sealers' Association has asked for an apology from the editor.
Anthony Jenkins makes no apologies for using the word "Newfie," and says the cartoon was a joke.
