In Moose Jaw North, veteran NDP MLA Glenn Hagel was taken down by a Saskatchewan Party challenger.
Yorkton, an NDP bastion since 1991 when Clay Serby first took the seat, also went the Saskatchewan Party's way.
Saskatchewan Rivers, a rural seat that was a big win for the NDP in 2003 — helping it maintain a razor-thin majority — fell this time to the Saskatchewan Party candidate.
Looking at the popular vote, the Saskatchewan Party's hold on rural areas was strong — about 62 per cent of the votes went to the party.
In urban areas, the NDP had about 45 per cent of the vote, compared with about 52 per cent in 2003. The Saskatchewan Party picked up about 40 per cent of the urban vote, compared with 29 per cent in 2003.
That shift paid off for the Saskatchewan Party in the province's two biggest cities.
The Saskatchewan Party took three seats from the NDP in Regina and two in Saskatoon.
One area where the NDP held on with no changes was the far north. Both the Cumberland and Athabasca constituencies re-elected NDP MLAs.
