Only 14% voted in Regina low-income zone

Regina's city council chamber on municipal election night. (Emily Elias/CBC)The voter turnout in one of Regina's low-income neighbourhoods for last month's civic elections was just under 14 per cent, according to information released by the city Friday.
Elections for members of city council were held Oct. 28. The overall voter turnout in Regina was 25 per cent.
But Ward 6, which includes much of a neighbourhood called North Central, recorded the lowest turnout of all 10 Regina wards. Councillor Wade Murray was re-elected there.
The best voter turnout in Regina was in Ward 10, where 31.5 per cent of eligible electors went to a polling station. In that ward, Saskatchewan Roughriders player Chris Szarka unseated incumbent Jerry Flegel.
According to data published on the city of Regina's website, the North Central community has a relatively high incidence of low-income households, at 47.2 per cent.
That contrasts with data from the West Zone, which covers parts of Ward 10, where only 9.8 per cent of people are classified as low-income.
The city's community profiles are several years old, dating to 2001, and do not match up to ward boundaries.
