Accused in bar brawl death appears in court

A man accused of second-degree murder and aggravated assault after a bar brawl on Oct. 30 is now before the courts in Broadview, Sask.

Karl Eldon Lerat, 20, is charged with killing Matthew Troy McKay, 18. He made his first appearance before a judge Wednesday morning.

Lerat was charged after turning himself in to police at the Broadview detachment of the RCMP. The brawl occurred at the Broadview Hotel in the community of 610 people about 150 kilometres east of Regina.

Lerat is also accused of aggravated assault on Jordan Lee Taypotat, 20.

The dead man was from the Ochapowace First Nation, while Taypotat is from Kahkewistahaw First Nation, both in the Broadview area.

Lerat is from the Cowessess First Nation. His next court appearance was set for Nov. 25. He remains in custody.
