Opposition questions safety at construction site

Last Updated: Tuesday, November 3, 2009 | 3:36 PM CT

Opposition members of the Saskatchewan legislature quizzed the government Tuesday over safety at a Regina-area construction site.

Andy Iwanchuk, the NDP's labour critic in the house, posed questions about the use of a crane on a warehouse project under development just west of Regina.

Iwanchuk told the house that a safety co-ordinator quit after concerns about the crane were ignored.

"Can the minister explain how a crane operated by X-Act Contracting Ltd. of Ontario got onto this construction site without anyone producing a log book that complied with the occupational health and safety laws?" Iwanchuk asked Labour minister Rob Norris.

Iwanchuk said the safety co-ordinator decided "the crane was in need of critical repairs."

Norris did not respond to Iwanchuk's question directly but told the house that the government is committed to worker safety.
