Bad weather blamed for train derailment near Sask. village

Strong winds may be to blame for a Canadian National train derailment Saturday near a southeastern Saskatchewan community.

Twenty cars jumped the tracks just after 11 a.m. CT near Yarbo, a village of about 70 located 20 kilometres north of Esterhazy.

"CN believes that severe weather conditions at the time of the incident likely caused the derailment," spokesman Kevin Franchuk said Sunday.

"The train crew reported extremely high winds in the area at the time that pushed some containers and cars on the train off the rail."

The cars were not carrying hazardous material and no one was injured, Franchuk said. Both CN and the federal Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

Rail traffic resumed Sunday around 10:30 a.m. CT.
