Lautermilch not running for re-election

Prince Albert NDP MLA cites family reasons for changing paths after 20 years in politics

Prince Albert MLA Eldon Lautermilch has become the seventh NDP MLA choosing not to run for re-election.

Lautermilch, Saskatchewan's highways minister and the minister responsible for forestry, held a news conference in Prince Albert on Thursday morning to make the announcement.

"It's only for family reasons," Lautermilch said. "I need to spend some time with my children, my grandchildren, in a way that I can't when I'm serving in cabinet. And so I intend to do that."

Lautermilch said he is not finished with politics and will continue to work with the NDP behind the scenes when the next provincial election is called.

Lautermilch, who was first elected to the provincial legislature in 1986 and has been re-elected in every subsequent election, represents Prince Albert Northcote.

The other six MLAs who aren't running in the next election are:

Eric Cline.
Joanne Crofford.
Doreen Hamilton.
Myron Kowalsky.
Peter Prebble.
Andrew Thomson.

Recent polls have indicated the NDP is running behind the Saskatchewan Party.

An election date hasn't been called, but Premier Lorne Calvert said earlier this year that fall was likely.
