Man charged in 1999 slaying of elderly woman

A Prince Albert man has been charged with murder in the killing seven years ago of a 92-year-old Saskatoon woman.

When Anna Hein was stabbed to death in her west side home in July 1999, police were unable to generate any leads.

However, last month, the RCMP lab called Saskatoon police to say DNA found at the scene had been matched to a suspect.

The break led to an arrest in Prince Albert on Thursday.

"It makes us extremely happy and excited that we can come to the next of kin and bring them some information that's hopefully going to give them some closure to the crime and the loss of a loved one," Staff Sgt. Kelly Cook of Saskatoon police said.

Larry McLeod, 33, who made his first court appearance Friday, is charged with first-degree murder in the death. McLeod, who was convicted of beating a Nova Scotia man to death in the early 1990s, has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to be back in court on Tuesday.
