The Action Démocratique du Québec gained a foothold in the eight-riding Eastern Townships region by claiming the former Liberal riding of Shefford and the former Parti Québécois seat in Johnson.
In doing so, it ousted the PQ from the region altogether in Monday's provincial election.
The Liberals held onto:
- Brome-Missisquoi with 39.8 per cent of the popular vote.
- Richmond with 42.3 per cent of the popular vote.
- Saint-François with 37.8 per cent of the popular vote.
- Mégantic-Compton with 33.0 per cent of the popular vote, beating the ADQ by only 209 ballots.
- Sherbrooke, where Premier Jean Charest won a seesaw battle by taking 36.6 of the vote, barely 1,332 more ballots than the PQ.
- Orford with 33.3 of the popular vote.
The ADQ won:
- Shefford with 42 per cent of the vote.
- Johnson with 36 per cent of the vote.
