An ADQ candidate in Abitibi-East, Que., is trying to stamp out sparks that erupted after he posted online comments with anti-Semitic connotations.

Gilles Gagnon, the ADQ candidate in the Abitibi-East riding, has landed in hot water for making controversial statements several times.

He accused them of waging war to maintain their economic status instead of distributing wealth in an equitable kind of way.
On Wednesday night, Gagnon issued a press release apologizing for his comments and said he hopes people will see that he's made a mistake. His website has been shut down.
Gagnon has attracted negative attention several times during the month-long Quebec election campaign. Early on, he was rebuked by Leader Mario Dumont for declaring that education should be free for all Quebecers as it is in Cuba.
Later in the campaign, when PQ candidate Sylvain Gaudreault was the target of homophobic slurs, Dumont distanced himself from Gagnon a second time because of past comments the Abitibi-East candidate has made about gay and lesbian relationships.
