Parti Québécois leader André Boisclair attended his largest campaign rally Tuesday night in the Saguenay region, a sovereigntist stronghold he hopes to count on at the ballot box in March.
Boisclair delivered an impassioned speech to about 500 supporters in Alma, praising locals for their entrepreneurial spirit and promising tax breaks for forestry and aluminum companies.
"I want to support the creation of jobs here in Saguenay–Lac St-Jean. I want to confirm the clear and special status of the region for the transformation of the aluminum industry, and I want to do the same thing for the forests and the wood products," said Boisclair, speaking in French.
Recent polls suggest the ADQ is making inroads in the Saguenay, where the PQ currently holds three of five seats at the national assembly.
Boisclair told CBC he's confident he can hold on to the region in the upcoming election. "We have a fantastic new team here. I have in the Saguenay–Lac St-Jean my dream team. Competent, intelligent, close to the people, who want to work — they're part of this new generation."
