Tuna fishermen on P.E.I. have decided to forgo a summer fishery altogether and open the season on Oct. 4.
Last year, the season was open for just four days in August, before closing again until October.
Fishermen decided on the split season in 2009 because prices are generally lower in the summer. The tuna have not yet had a chance to fatten up.
Fishermen will be limited to one fish per day this year. It will be a five-day-per-week fishery until the 132-tonne quota is reached.
This year's management plan was decided on the basis of the results of a mail-out questionnaire sent to all 359 tuna fishermen on P.E.I.
