Guilty plea in Special Olympics fraud case

A former executive director of Special Olympics P.E.I. has pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud.
James Henry McClean, 41, of Charlottetown, joined the organization in November 2005 and retired in October 2008.
The organization discovered a problem after a financial review was conducted after McClean left the group. At the time, neither the group nor the police would say how much money they suspected was missing.
Court documents allege that McClean forged a cheque and provided a false financial statement to the volunteer board of directors. Police were called in after questionable transactions were found; their investigation took three months to complete.
A pre-sentence report was ordered on Wednesday. Sentencing will take place on Dec. 5.
