No charges in dirt bike collision with car

Last Updated: Monday, November 23, 2009 | 8:03 AM AT

P.E.I. RCMP will not be laying charges in connection with a collision Saturday afternoon between a car and two 12-year-old boys on a dirt bike.

'They were scared…. They realized what could have happened.'— RCMP Cpl. Scott Lundrigan

The collision occurred on the Clermont Road, north of Summerside, when the boy operating the bike made a sharp left turn to cross the highway, as the car was passing. The driver of the car wasn't hurt.

One of the boys was released from hospital, while the other was taken to the QEH in Charlottetown with a broken leg and other non-life-threatening injuries.

Cpl. Scott Lundrigan of East Prince RCMP said the two boys and their friends have learned a lesson, and that charges aren't necessary.

"They were scared because they could tell that their friend had a fairly serious injury. They realized what could have happened,' said Lundrigan.

"We were talking to them afterwards and a couple of them very clearly stated that one of them wanted to nothing more than to carefully get his motorcycle home and put it away for the winter. I think being as young as they were, they'll carry this with them for a while, it can only be a benefit at this point."

Lundrigan said the boys were wearing helmets at the time, but they popped off during the crash. He advises anyone riding a motorcycle to make sure helmet straps are properly fastened.
