Summerside fire was arson: police

Last Updated: Wednesday, November 4, 2009 | 3:54 PM AT

Summerside police and the provincial fire marshal's office are investigating an arson at a vacant home on Duke Street Tuesday night.

Police say a neighbour called in the fire shortly before 10 p.m.

There's no question the blaze was deliberately set, said Deputy Police Chief Dave Griffin.

"The back door was kicked in, and the fire was started in at least three different spots inside," he said.

Although the house has been vacant for some time, the investigation revealed that young people have been seen going in and out of the property during the last few weeks, said Griffin.

"But nobody called us, and so we're following up on those leads right now," he said. "We know that it was set, but we don't have any speculation at this point to say why or how."

The fire caused extensive damage and could have easily spread to other buildings in the crowded neighbourhood, Griffin said.
