Civic election day across much of P.E.I.

Last Updated: Sunday, November 1, 2009 | 7:48 PM AT

Monday is municipal election day in most of the smaller communities on Prince Edward Island.

There will be races for the top jobs in Alberton, Georgetown, Kensington, Montague, Borden-Carleton and Tignish.

But the community generating the most interest is arguably Souris, where four people are running to replace Mayor Joanne Reid.

An unusually high number of candidates have turned out this year and there won't be any acclamations for mayors or councillors — a dramatic change from 2006, when officials had to go out searching to find candidates to acclaim.

Polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, 63 other communities, from Miminegash to Murray Harbour, will hold community meetings Monday night to elect their new councils.

The winners will represent their municipalities for three years.

Municipal elections in Charlottetown, Summerside, Cornwall and Stratford won't be until Nov. 1, 2010.
