The P.E.I. government has issued a request for proposals for a consultant to help plan long-term care homes in Charlottetown and Summerside.
There is no overall increase in number of beds planned, says Rob Philpott of the Health Department. (CBC) The plan would replace the Prince Edward Home in Charlottetown and Somerset Manor in Summerside.
Rob Philpott of the Health Department confirmed for CBC News Tuesday the government is ready to move ahead with two new manors. The announcement comes in advance of the release of the province's long-term care plan, which is expected by the end of the year.
Philpott said the successful bidder on the RFP will look at staffing, program and space needs for the new manors. The government doesn't expect to increase the number of beds in the facilities, but some could be reallocated.
"For example, we may take, out of the 132 beds that are set aside right now for Prince Edward Home, there may be 40 or 50 beds that are set aside for residents with dementia. In the new facility, we may set maybe somewhere around 75 to 80 beds for residents with dementia," he said.
The government is looking at new locations within Charlottetown and Summerside for the manors. Philpott did not know what plans there were for the old buildings.
