Farming accident lands P.E.I. man in Halifax hospital

Last Updated: Friday, October 10, 2008 | 11:01 AM AT

A farmer from central P.E.I. is in hospital in Halifax following an accident Wednesday morning.

The South Freetown farmer was spraying his field when he noticed a problem with his equipment. He got down off his tractor and as he was trying to make the repairs his arm got caught in the sprayer.

"Amazingly enough, there happened to be someone traveling by who was actually an emergency responder, who saw the farmer laying in the field and trying to talk on his cellphone," George Stewart, the director of the occupational health and safety division of the Workers Compensation Board, told CBC News Thursday.

"He went in and assisted him in getting emergency response people to the site."

The farmer was given first aid on site and was eventually transported to a hospital in Halifax. His condition isn't known at this point.

An investigation is underway. Stewart said his department will have to interview the farmer. The investigation will look at any safety measures that might have prevented the accident from happening. Those findings will then be sent out to farmers across the province.
