A new bus service will run between Charlottetown and Summerside starting at the end of October.
Since passenger trains stopped running in 1968, bus service between communities has been sporadic, and there has been none in more than a decade. Community and Cultural Affairs Minister Carolyn Bertram announced the details of the County Line Express Monday.
"Given that over one-quarter of our greenhouse gas emissions come from automobiles, anything we can do to foster a cleaner transportation option will be a welcome step indeed," said Bertram.
"I think it's going to make a great difference in our Island community to create a safe, smart, sustainable service."
The County Line Express will be operated by Trius Tours, the same company currently running Charlottetown's transit system. The province is contributing $28,000 toward the first year of operation, at which time the service will be reviewed and more funding might be made available.
Fares will range from $3 to $7 for a one-way trip, depending on the length of your ride, with regular stops in Charlottetown, Hunter River, Kensington, Summerside and Slemon Park. The bus will also stop in Winsloe, Milton, Brookfield, Fredericton, Summerfield and New Annan on request.
The service will run in the morning and afternoon; a more exact schedule will be announced later this month.
