After 2½ weeks of having to detour around their town to get to and from Charlottetown, residents of Cornwall can once again use the Trans-Canada Highway.
'Our main goal in the town of Cornwall is to make sure that our roads are safe.' — Mayor Patrick MacFadyen
The detour, set up to allow transportation crews to repair major damage from post-tropical storm Hanna on Sept. 7, was lifted late Tuesday evening. Paving crews worked late into the evening to ensure the roadway was ready for the Wednesday morning rush.
"It's been a trying time for all residents and we're just grateful that the work is finally complete," said Mayor Patrick MacFadyen.
"Our main goal in the town of Cornwall is to make sure that our roads are safe, and hopefully this will continue to keep our roads as safe as possible."
The area remains a construction zone as crews have some cleaning up and final touches left to do.
Another detour caused by the storm, on Brackley Point Road at Harrington, is expected to be lifted by the end of the week.
