Egmont MP Joe McGuire is back on P.E.I. following a top secret visit to Afghanistan.
McGuire went to Afghanistan as a member of the standing committee on national defence. For a few days this week, committee members had the opportunity to meet with Canadian officials and Afghan leaders.
"We went to a provincial reconstruction team effort in Kandahar city," said McGuire.
"The local population are quite pleased with the development dollars that are starting to have an effect in their area, setting up small business, microcredit business for the ordinary Afghani and particularly women.
"They're pleased with the education efforts we're making throughout the whole country. It's a big, big job and we've got four years left in our tenure."
McGuire met with several Islanders working in Afghanistan, including the head of the MPs' security detail, a military doctor and a worker with the Canadian International Development Agency.
The trip by the committee was kept secret until the MPs returned to Canada, for what the government said were security reasons.
