McGuinty strikes back at HST critics

Last Updated: Tuesday, November 24, 2009 | 12:41 PM ET

Premier Dalton McGuinty is firing back at opposition critics over the HST, accusing them of distorting the truth about the single sales tax to scare people.

After repeatedly being called a liar by Progressive Conservative critics, McGuinty blasted the Opposition on Tuesday over the harmonized sales tax, saying it has no plan to move Ontario's economy forward.

The Opposition won't promise that it would undo the move to a single, 13 per cent sales tax, and is fear mongering, said McGuinty.

He said all they're offering now is "myths and fictions" to induce fear among Ontarians.

The Conservatives have been vocal in their criticism of the government in recent days.

They walked out en masse from Monday's question period and vow to keep using whatever tactics they can to slow the government's HST legislation.

The Tories want the government to hold public hearings on the HST, which kicks in next July. McGuinty has so far refused to do so.
