4 charged in Ottawa liquor truck kidnapping

Last Updated: Monday, November 23, 2009 | 5:39 PM ET

Four Toronto-area men have been charged with kidnapping in relation to the robbery of a tractor-trailer full of alcohol in Ottawa in July.

The four men, who ranged in age from 21 and 36, appeared in court in Brampton, Ont., to face charges of kidnapping, robbery, conspiracy and use of an imitation firearm while committing an offence, Ottawa police reported Monday.

The accused were among 10 Ottawa-area men arrested earlier in November in relation to a series of tractor-trailer robberies, mostly in Peel Region near Toronto.

During those incidents, truck drivers or security guards were assaulted and held against their will while the tobacco, electronics and appliances inside the trucks, estimated to be worth "multi-millions" in total, were stolen, Peel Regional Police reported. None of the victims were hurt. About $1.6 million in Imperial Tobacco products and $65,000 in appliances has since been recovered.

In the Ottawa robbery on July 28, a tractor-trailer loaded with hundreds of cases of alcohol was parked outside an LCBO store on Bank Street, near Walkley Road shortly after midnight. The driver was approached and restrained, then two men drove away with the driver still inside the vehicle.

He was not hurt was later found with the tractor near Vaudreuil, Quebec, just west of Montreal.
