Grounded St. Lawrence ship finally freed

A freighter that was stuck in the St. Lawrence River for five days has finally been freed.

According to V. Ships, the company that acts as technical manager for the Canada Steamship Lines vessel Assiniboine, it took four tug boats and the removal of 10 per cent of the ship's cargo to dislodge it late Saturday.

The ship, which is built to carry 30,000 tonnes, became stuck Nov. 16 near Cardinal, Ont., about 50 kilometres west of Cornwall, while heading toward Quebec with a load of soya. There were no spills or injuries.

Officials said an underwater inspection will be conducted to determine the extent of damage to the vessel and Transport Canada will continue to investigate the cause of the grounding.
