Police boats cruise McGregor Lake near Val-des-Monts where a man was rescued Monday, but died later in hospital. (CBC)Two people drowned in the Ottawa area Wednesday, a two-year-old boy in Mountain, just south of the city, and a 50-year-old man swimming in the Ottawa River in Gatineau just across the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge from Parliament Hill.
Ontario Provincial Police said the toddler died after falling into a backyard swimming pool in Mountain, near Kemptville, Ont.
The boy's uncle pulled him out of the pool, and a relative performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead in hospital, police said.
The Ottawa man who drowned in Gatineau was swimming near the Hull Marina when he got into difficulty. A friend who was watching from shore, but was a non-swimmer, ran to call for help, but it was too late.
When emergency crews arrived, they found the man's body in shallow water near the shore. They administered CPR before rushing him to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Not long after this incident, it was reported that two teenage girls were missing after their boat capsized in Lac d'Argile near Val-des-Bois in western Quebec.
However, it was later reported the girls had made it to shore and were safe.
Police have not released names in either drowning.
There have been several deadly incidents on the water in western Quebec in recent weeks.
On Monday, a 69-year-old man died in the Gatineau hospital after he had been rescued from McGregor Lake near Val-des-Monts.
In May, two people drowned in McGregor Lake. A 64-year-old Gatineau man died on May 15 after a rowboat capsized while he was out fishing. He wasn't wearing a life-jacket. Five days before that accident, a 29-year-old woman drowned after falling out of a canoe.
