Voter turnout was 59 per cent Tuesday among Nova Scotians who were registered to vote prior to the provincial election, an Elections Nova Scotia spokesman said Wednesday.
But that number should go up, Dana Philip Dioron said, because a number of people registered at the polls immediately before casting their vote. Those numbers won’t be tallied until Thursday.
"We will have exact numbers tomorrow morning," he said.
There were 691,000 registered voters for this election.
The turnout for advance polls was strong, up by 17 per cent compared with the 2006 election. That translates to approximately 11,000 more people, or 63,000 in total, who voted early.
Voter turnout for the 2006 provincial election was 61 per cent.
Nova Scotians elected the province's first NDP government, ending a decade of Progressive Conservative rule in the province. The New Democrats, under Leader Darrell Dexter, won 31 seats in the 52-seat legislature.
It also marks the first time since 2003 that Nova Scotia has had a majority government.
