Newfoundland and Labrador's New Democratic Party leader has sent a congratulatory message to Nova Scotia premier-designate Darrell Dexter, following Tuesday night's resounding win in that province's election.

Dexter led the NDP to its first government in Nova Scotia.

In a statement, Michael credited a "terrific campaign" for the NDP win, and suggested she hopes the win could help her party's fortunes in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"The people of Nova Scotia have sent a clear message — that the NDP ideals of social justice, equality, and economic progress are ideas that resonate with the average Atlantic Canadian," Michael said.

Michael sits alone in Newfoundland's house of assembly, where the NDP has never been able to form a caucus larger than two seats.

Michael said she looks forward to collaborating with Dexter.
