Northeast N.S. switches from Tory to NDP

Last Updated: Tuesday, June 9, 2009 | 10:01 PM ET

Voters in northeastern Nova Scotia joined the rest of the province in riding the orange wave by electing eight NDP candidates to the provincial legislature.

The NDP sweep in the region marked a near complete switch from the Progressive Conservative Party which held all but two of the 11 electoral districts in the region prior to the election Tuesday night. The NDP went into the election holding the other two districts.

The PC party was only able to hold on to three districts in the northeastern region on election night.

The New Democratic Party was able to maintain its hold on seats in Pictou East and Pictou West. In addition, it gained the electoral districts of Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley, Cumberland North, Eastern Shore, Guysborough-Sheet Harbour, Pictou Centre and Truro-Bible Hill.

The PC party was only able to hold onto three of its districts Tuesday night: Antigonish, Colchester North and Cumberland South.

Ernie Fage, who ran as an independent after being kicked out of the Tory caucus in 2007, lost his re-election bid in the district of Cumberland North to NDP candidate Brian Skabar.

Two Tory candidates chose not to run in the 2009 election: Brooke Taylor in Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley and Jamie Muir in Truro-Bible Hill.

NDP candidate Gary Burrill was elected in Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley and NDP Lenore Zann was elected in Truro-Bible Hill.
