NDP pledges rebate for university, college students

Last Updated: Friday, May 22, 2009 | 2:34 PM ET

Nova Scotia New Democrats are offering post-secondary graduates a tax incentive to stay and work in the province.

NDP Leader Darrell Dexter says under the rebate program students who graduate this month from university could get up to $15,000 back over a six-year period, while college graduates could see up to $7,500.

Dexter says the aim is to help Nova Scotia compete with provinces like Saskatchewan and New Brunswick, which offer rebates of up to $20,000, and Manitoba, which offers $25,000.

He says the program would cost the province an additional $6.5 million.

Graduates will be able to claim a maximum of $2,500 a year.

Dexter made the announcement Friday during a campaign stop in Dartmouth.
