Liberals vow to end gas-price regulation

Last Updated: Friday, May 15, 2009 | 3:27 PM ET

The Nova Scotia Liberals are promising to scrap gasoline price regulation and reduce the motive fuel tax if elected on June 9.

Party Leader Stephen McNeil says almost three years of gas regulation have hurt the economy.

McNeil says he'd get rid of the system — and its $10-million price tag — immediately after becoming premier.

Since the Tories brought in the regulation in 2006, prices in the province have continued to be some of the highest in the country, McNeil said.

The Liberal leader said he would cut the motive fuel tax by one cent a litre right away and by a minimum of one cent in each of the following three years.

Nova Scotians are paying the highest per-capita gas taxes and the second highest provincial fuel taxes in the country, McNeil said.
