Tories promise boost to tax credit for volunteer firefighters

Last Updated: Tuesday, May 12, 2009 | 10:02 AM ET

Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative Leader Rodney MacDonald says his party is committed to increasing the tax credit for volunteer firefighters.

Campaigning in the Halifax area Tuesday, MacDonald says the Conservatives will bump the credit up to $500 if they win the June 9 election.

The Tories introduced a $250 credit in 2007 as a way of recognizing the efforts of those who volunteer to work as firefighters in smaller rural communities.

Last year, they hiked it to $375 and extended the credit to those who volunteer with ground search and rescue groups as well.

There are about 8,000 volunteer firefighters in Nova Scotia and about 1,700 members of ground search and rescue teams.
