Investigators are trying to determine if Carmel Payne's SUV crossed the centre line. (CBC)The woman killed Friday morning in a fiery head-on collision between a sport utility vehicle and a military bus outside Dartmouth has been identified as Carmel Payne.
Payne, believed to be in her mid-forties, was married to Petty Officer 1st class Rick Payne, according to CFB Halifax officials.
Her husband, who was on an overseas deployment, is returning home.
The couple has two adult daughters, officials said.
Two witnesses to the 9:40 a.m. crash on the Forest Hills Extension, off Main Street, said the military bus was in its own lane, travelling at normal speed when they heard a loud bang.
All three people on the bus were taken to hospital — one with serious injuries and two with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators are looking into the possibility the SUV crossed the centre line on the straight section of road.
