Three Acadian communities along the western coast of Cape Breton are having to contend with wells contaminated by sewage.
The wells in St. Joseph du Moine, Cap LeMoine and Grand Etang, all located on the Cabot Trail, are contaminated because sewage is running into streams and ditches along the road.
Leandre LeBlanc, president of the Lemoine Development Association, said his group has been studying the problem for more than 10 years.
"Disposal systems are old. Some of them cannot be upgraded because people do not have enough property because the area is mostly clay, where it is very difficult to build the proper systems," LeBlanc said. "[It's] very expensive, and they don't work very well."
LeBlanc's group had hoped to get $5 million through the federal stimulus program to build a safe sewage system for the three communities, but, so far, the project remains unfunded.
