Two young children suffered minor burns in a fire that gutted a mobile home in Reserve Mines, N.S., on Monday evening.
The one-year-old girl and four-year-old boy were in the bedroom on Emery Street where the fire broke out.
Mom Margaret MacLean knew she had to act fast.
"The flames were shooting all over the place and the smoke was very thick. All I thought of when I breathed in the smoke was I've got to poke through this and get the kids out," she said.
She called out to her husband, Edward Noseworthy, who was outside.
Noseworthy ran into the bedroom, reached through the flames and plucked the boy from behind a bed. His wife grabbed the little girl.
"I was very scared that they were going to die in the fire," MacLean said.
Luckily, no one was seriously hurt. The girl suffered burns on her forehead, while the boy suffered burns to his hand. They were both treated in hospital and released.
For now, the two adults and five children are staying at a friend's place. Noseworthy hopes to get on his feet soon to move to Halifax, where a full-time job awaits.
He's grateful for all the help the family is getting.
"I would never want to go through this again," he said.
Cape Breton Regional Police said investigators believe the fire was accidental and started with a space heater.
