Man charged with attempted murder, arson after Monastery fire

Last Updated: Thursday, July 2, 2009 | 5:30 PM AT

A Nova Scotia man has been charged with attempted murder and arson following a fire at a home in Antigonish County earlier this week.

James Bernard Decoste, 36, was also charged with uttering threats and production of a controlled substance during an appearance in Antigonish provincial court on Thursday.

Decoste was arrested early Tuesday shortly after the fire near Monastery.

Antigonish RCMP said they received a complaint around 2:30 a.m. that someone had made a threat.

Officers first went to the location where the call came from. When they couldn't find the caller, they went to the man's home. The trailer was on fire when they arrived.

RCMP said there was a man inside the burning home who escaped unharmed, but he wasn't the person who had been threatened.

Decoste has been remanded into custody. He is scheduled to return to court on Monday to enter a plea.
