The body of a man found floating in the water near Peggys Cove early Friday morning has been sent to the provincial medical examiner's office to await positive identification.
Tantallon RCMP Const. Tamu Bracken said police are in touch with people whom they believe are the man’s next of kin.
"But positive identification has not been made and we can't make that until the body has been viewed," she said.
"Right now we cannot say how long the body was in the water, and that will be determined by the autopsy that will be done [Saturday] morning."
Mackerel fishermen found the man, who appears to be about 60 years old, at 5:45 a.m. when they went to check their nets. The man was wearing a life-jacket, shorts, and a T-shirt.
Lawrence Morash, one of the men on board the fishing boat who helped recover the man’s body, said it wasn’t a pleasant task.
"Well, it wasn't a very pleasant sight, but I guess you just can't avoid it. You've got to bring the body in. It’s good for the family to have the body, I guess — put them at rest," Morash said.
Nova Scotia RCMP, the Canadian Coast Guard and Canadian navy officials were involved in the investigation of the case.
The Canadian Coast Guard cutter Sambro searched near where fishermen found the man's body floating. A Sea King helicopter was also on standby.
