Police nab 299 cases of contraband tobacco

Last Updated: Thursday, January 29, 2009 | 11:07 AM AT

RCMP say they seized 299 cases of illegal cigarettes Wednesday near Musquodoboit Harbour.

The Mounties are calling the noon-time bust in Smith Settlement one of the largest in Nova Scotia in recent memory.

It will have a "significant impact" on the distribution of contraband tobacco in the province, the RCMP said in release.

A 45-year-old man from Montreal who was arrested at the scene is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth provincial court on Thursday.

A 43-year-old man was also arrested, but he was released pending a court date at a later time.

Both men face several charges under the Excise Act and Revenue Act.
