Fire officials said smoke and flames were clearly visible as firefighters arrived around 2:15 a.m.
"We tried to make an interior attack and were forced out by the volume of fire," said Bryson Wilson, Halifax fire platoon chief.
Wilson said firefighters shifted their focus to the adjacent buildings, blasting them with water to protect them.
When it was safe to go inside the burning building, he said, it took firefighters an hour and a half to put the blaze out.
Investigators are now trying to determine the cause of the fire.
There were no reports of injuries. Police had evacuated people from apartments in an adjacent building before firefighters arrived.
Traffic was rerouted from the area for several hours as firefighters continued to look for hot spots.
