'I did not solicit her,' N.S. politician says of hitchhiker

Nova Scotia Fisheries Minister Ron Chisholm is insisting he did nothing wrong by agreeing to give a woman who was a "person of interest" to police a lift home two weeks ago.

The Guysborough-Sheet Harbour MLA said he was just helping a stranger, referring to the woman who tapped on his window in the parking lot of a Tim Hortons in Dartmouth.

When asked by reporters on Wednesday what the two talked about before police pulled the car over, Chisholm said she did not solicit him and "I did not solicit her."

Chisholm said it was freezing at the time, about -30 C with the wind chill.

"In my mind it was a person who wanted a ride home, and with hindsight we're all experts, I guess. And would I do it again? Probably would, but yeah, I'd be awfully careful."

The minister said it's not the first time he has picked up a hitchhiker and he didn't think anything was wrong until police pulled him over.

Police described the woman as a "person of interest" to them and detained her, while allowing Chisholm to continue on his way.
