Whitehorse dam work knocks out power

Last Updated: Wednesday, November 4, 2009 | 3:05 PM CT

Maintenance work at Yukon Energy Corp.'s hydroelectric dam in Whitehorse caused the power to go out across much of southern Yukon for about an hour Wednesday morning.

The outage began just after 8 a.m. PT, affecting all customers who get their power from the Whitehorse-Aishihik-Faro hydro transmission grid.

"There was some routine filter maintenance work that was being done in our Whitehorse hydro No. 4 plant," Yukon Energy spokesperson Janet Patterson told CBC News. "That inadvertently caused that unit to trip off, which resulted in the outage."

Yukon Energy technicians worked with Yukon Electrical Co. Ltd. to bring the power system back up gradually.
